Jökulsárlón glacier walk

Jökulsárlón is a glacier lagoon: a lake of meltwater at the foot of Breiðamerkurjökull, an outlet of Vatnajökull, with icebergs drifting in it. The view from the car park is why most visitors stop. Both are guided, because there is no other way onto Icelandic ice. The crampons and the guide are not an upgrade you can decline: they are the booking.

$134 — Vatnajökull Glacier Guided Hiking Tour. This is the straightforward one. Four and a half hours from the lagoon, crampons and a helmet and a harness in the price, and a guide who walks you through crevasses and ice formations on Europe’s largest glacier. Its 1,008 reviews at 4.7 make it the best-reviewed walk on this side of Vatnajökull. If you are staying a night in the area and want to be on the ice without giving up the whole day, book this.

$285 — Glacier Hike to a Remote Ice Cave. Six hours, and the extra ninety minutes are spent moving rather than waiting: a 4x4 leg out to a remote part of the national park, then a longer hike to a blue cave and ice canyons that the busier trips do not reach. Headlamps are supplied along with the glacier gear. The 5.0 rating across 264 reviews is the highest on this site, and the reason to take it is straightforward — you get a cave and you get it without a queue.

The verdict. If this is your first time in crampons and the lagoon is one stop on a Ring Road drive, $134 is the right size of commitment. If you have built the day around the ice, or if a natural blue cave is the photograph you came to Iceland for, $285 is worth the longer clock and the higher price, and its rating says the people who took it agree. Either way you are on Vatnajökull with a guide and the same gear.

The guided hike at $134 runs across the seasons and its booked length does not change with the month. What changes is the daylight and the driving. In summer the long light makes the whole south-east easy to travel and the lagoon is at its busiest; in the darker months there are fewer people at the car park and the road east takes longer than the map suggests.

The remote cave trip is the seasonal one. Natural blue ice caves are sold only when conditions allow, and $285 publishes its own dates on the listing. If the cave is the reason you are coming to this corner of Iceland, check that calendar before booking flights and accommodation, not after.
